History of the Military Flight Jackets

The historic flight jacket was born back in September of 1917 when the United States Army established the Aviation Clothing Board. Sometimes referred to as a bomber jacket or bombardier jacket, the typical flight jacket has high wrap around collars, zipper closures with wide thick wind flaps, snug cuffs, and waits. Some are even fringed and lined with fur. The purpose of the flight jacket was to keep pilots warm since the airplanes then had open cockpits where the pilots were exposed to wind and the elements. Military Pilots wearing Leather Flight Jackets
