New Brand Spotlight: Snugpak

New to Harry’s this spring is a brand called Snugpak. Snugpak is a company based out of the U.K. and they produce top of the line sleeping bags, duffles, and other outdoor gear. Snugpak was started by a couple in the U.K. in 1977. The first product was an insulated body warming suit that could be worn under a dry suit. These days Snugpak is still an independent company, but the board of directors and made Snugpak an internationally known brand. The high quality workmanship and materials has landed Snugpak several government contracts and the products are used on every continent.

The Snugpak sleeping bags are really something! We are carrying 7 different styles, all with different ratings so there is surely one to fit your needs. The Snugpak Travelpak 1 is great for tropical climates or warmer weather. The temperature rating is 45°F to 36°F and is made with breathable, moisture wicking materials. One of the coolest features of this sleeping bag is the built in mosquito net to cover your face at night, keeping away any unwanted pests. Another great feature would be how easy it is to transport. The sleeping bag can be rolled up in to an easy to carry bag.sleeping bag

Other great products from Snugpak include their All Weather Survival Shelter and Jungle Hammock with Mosquito Netting. The shelter will come in handy when the weather becomes unpredictable out in the wilderness. Good against rain and snow. If you want to camp with just the bare minimum than the jungle hammock is a good choice. Super lightweight and easy to carry, all you need to do is find two trees to tie the hammock to. The mosquito net will protect you from all of those pesky bugs while you are sleeping.

If camping and hiking aren’t really your thing then Snugpak also makes duffle bags perfect for traveling. Check out the Subdivide Black Roller Travel Bag. Ultimate Survival Gear, The Zombie Apocalypse Continues

By the looks of it, we have all survived the Mayan Apocalypse without any problems, so now we can all go back to waiting for our favorite world ending event; the zombie apocalypse! With everyone’s favorite zombie show, The Walking Dead, off the air until February, we thought we would give you your zombie fix with a list products to complete imgresyour zombie apocalypse survival kit and make you the ultimate zombie killing machine.

To start out the list, we all know that everyone imagines themselves looking like a bad a$$ when the zombies rise ( myself included), so you need to have the perfect zombie apocalypse outfit on hand. A basic military BDU pant is a good choice due to the functional design, including several pockets to store your extra ammo. Don’t worry ladies, these pants also come in pink camo so you can still have a touch of femininity during Tactical Vestthe zombie invasion. A tactical vest is also a smart choice. All of the pouches allow you to keep all of your gear close to your body and easy to access. Throw on a moisture wicking t-shirt on underneath and you’ll be good to go. Another great option would also be a leather jacket. Tough and durable, leather may help prevent biters from getting to your skin. What you have on your feet is also important. I suggest a tall leather boot.

As far as zombie weapons and zombie tools, guns are typically the most efficient, but not everyone has access to guns and some do not even want guns in their Machetehouse. So here are some creative, yet effective alternatives. The Parang Machete is a great choice for those of you who don’t mind getting close to the walkers. The ergonomic handle has a comfortable, textured grip so the chance of slippage when your swinging the machete through the air is greatly reduced. The SOG Tomahawk is also perfect to have during the rise of the dead. Not only can it be used to destroy zombies, it can be used for other purposes like chopping wood and it can be attached to your belt.

In addition to all of these items, Harry’s also has a number of survival items like food and water rations, first aid kits, emergency blankets, and more that are all practical items to have around the house in case of a more likely emergency, but would still be great to have in case of the zombie invasion.

All of these items will help make you look like and feel like the ultimate zombie killing bad a$$, but it’s up to you to summon your inner warrior to get the job done.

5 Tips on How to Keep Feet Dry this Winter

Feet sweat. It’s a fact of life. It’s normal. Nevertheless, you want to try to keep your feet as dry as you can. Damp sweaty feet are not just uncomfortable, they can lead to problems such as Athlete’s Foot and painful sores. Excessive moisture in socks and boots combined with body heat creates the perfect breeding ground for all sorts of bacteria, bacteria that can cause nasty foot odors or even Athlete’s Foot. Too much dampness in socks can cause feet to slide around in boots, causing blisters and painful callouses to develop. Luckily, your team at Harry’s Army Surplus has scrounged up some good intel on quick, easy ways to combat the sweat!

  1. Wash Feet Daily. Give the dogs a good scrubbing every day with some antibacterial soap. Wash twice daily if sweat is excessive.
  2. Dry Feet Completely. Really get in there, dry in between those toes. Don’t skip this step! You don’t wanWigwam Sockst to bring any moisture into your boots. Use a hairdryer on a cool setting if needed.
  3. Use Foot Powder. Sprinkle on the bottoms of feet and in between toes. There are a lot of choices out there, but we don’t recommend cornstarch based powders; when they get moist, they can gum up and leave a gross paste in your toes. Harry’s has military grade foot powder available in store. Drug stores have good options, such as Gold Bond or Dr. Scholl’s.
  4.  Chose The Right Sock. Don’t go for cotton. Cotton will absorb sweat like a sponge and keep it trapped on your foot. You’ll want a good wool sock or synthetic moisture wicking material. Wigwam makes some wonderful socks that we love.
  5. Let Boots Dry. Boots and shoes need at least 24 hours to sufficiently dry out. Rotate your footwear and don’t wear the same boots 2 days in a row, if you do your boots will never dry and will get really funky fast.

With winter coming up fast, this information is just as valuable as in the hot summer. Dry feet are happy, warm feet. Wet feet trap cold, giving rise to cold weather injuries like frostbite. Come visit Harry’s Army Surplus and keep those feet dry and comfy!

Do Moisture Wicking Fabrics Really Work?

Moisture wicking fabrics are being used in all sorts of clothing items lately, from moisture wicking t-shirts to sports bras to moisture wicking socks. Do these fabrics really help keep you dry? Absolutely! While no fabric will keep you perfectly dry at all times, moisture wicking fabrics are significantly better at keeping you dry compared to traditional natural fibers like cotton.

Moisture wicking fabrics are created from synthetic fibers that are hydrophobic, or water-hating. These fibers do not absorb water but instead repel it towards the surface, allowing for fast evaporation and drying. Synthetic fibers such as polyester and polypropylene are used in these fabrics. Natural fibers like cotton are hydrophilic, or water-loving. Natural fibers are great at absorbing moisture but do not evaporate as well, leaving you feeling damp longer. Blends of these fibers create an excellent moisture wicking material that creates a “pull/push” effect, pulling the moisture away from the skin and pushing it to the fabric surface to evaporate. Since the wetness pulls to the surface of the fabric, the skin stays considerably drier than with pure cotton. Poly/cotton blends are highly breathable providing air circulation and added comfort.

Cold weather clothing is also an important use of moisture wicking fabric. Since the fabric dries much quicker, there is less chance of moisture freezing and causing hypothermia or cold weather injuries like frostbite. No one wants to sit around in cold, soaking wet clothing!
