Zombies…..They’re coming! Everyone knows the apocalypse is on its way. The real question to ask yourself is “Are you prepared?”
We all know how to kill them, destroy the brain obviously, but do you have the tools or know how to really survive if they took over the world? The Harry’s team is extremely well versed on zombies and survival gear, so we’ve provided some tips and tricks to help you survive.
The most important item that you need to have is a weapon. I am sure you’re thinking “Well I have a gun,” and yes that IS the obvious choice, but when you really think about it, is it the smartest choice? Not really. Guns are loud, which draws more zombies to you, and you WILL run out of ammo. A smarter choice would be a machete or an axe. No sound and they can be continuously used, though you may want to give a wash every now and then to avoid undesirable odors. Remember…AIM FOR THE HEAD!
Another thing you may want to consider would be the group of people you are with…if you are with a group. There are pros and cons to being in a group, small or big, and to being a lone wolf. I’m not going to say which would be better, that’s really a personal preference. If you do choose to go with a group, there are some “types” you may want to avoid. These people can often be annoying and extremely detrimental to the welfare of the group…here are some examples.
1. You may encounter someone in your group who claims to be a zombie expert. This person may or may not claim that for the following reasons…”They played zombie mode on Call of Duty so they FOR SURE know how to kill things” or ”They totally own every zombie movie ever made so they obviously know how to kill things.” This said person may be a Walking Dead fan and claim to be as awesome as main characters Rick or Daryl. In reality this person is NOT as awesome and would most likely freeze up if they actually had to kill something. If you are willing to put up with the constant know it all attitude that this person may have then by all means stay with this group.
2. The Loud Mouth. This is obvious. A loud mouth can potentially draw more zombies to your location. If they can’t keep their volume under control, then some other arraignments may need to be made for this person.
3. The Constant Whiner. The apocalypse will suck…for everyone. But inevitably there will be that one person looking for more sympathy then anyone else. This will get very old to hear. I would avoid this type at all cost.
Having a good supply of survival gear is key, but make sure you keep an eye on it…people tend to lose all restraint in a time of need so it could get stolen. In this array of goods should be a durable backpack to carry your stuff ( and to keep your hands free), a fire starter ( don’t make the fire too big though), water purifying tablets for clean drinking water, a good knife, a first aid kit, and multi-tool. Of course there will be room for more stuff maybe an emergency blanket or a poncho, really the choice is yours. Just remember YOU will be carrying it, not anyone else so don’t make it too heavy.
Another good idea to increase your survival rate would be to get out of the city or suburbs and head to the country. Cities and suburbs are more densely populated and the chances of getting bit higher. The country has plenty of benefits including less people, more food sources, and open area. If you aren’t a country person, you better suck it up and get ready to live outdoors for a bit. It will be safer then being in heavily populated metropolis with zombies around every corner.
My last piece of advice to you would be “If all else fails, RUN!” If you’ve lost your weapon or a zombie horde is approaching and you feel like you are out of options, just run. Humans are faster that zombies (traditionally) so getting away should be feasible if you are in OK shape.
If you are looking for my zombie apocalypse gear or tips or even just some basic survival knowledge, stop in and talk to our sales staff. They will be sure to give you the best info and show you the most reliable survival gear, backpacks, and footwear so that you can be prepared! One day zombies may take over the world…..so please remember AIM FOR THE HEAD!

Dave Black provides readers with step by step instructions and actions to makes it through a variety of cirses, ranging from terrorist acts to deadly natural disasters. On top of all that, this survival book provides readers with a hierarchy for response that includes communication, healthcare, food, water, and shelter when government institutions fall. This book is a fun and informational read and even though you may not think catastrophic events will happen, you will still be prepared if they do.
When you think of prepping, you may think of the people on television that have ridiculous stock piles of supplies that will end up expiring in 5 years because it hasn’t been used, but in reality it is a good idea to have some supplies on hand for an emergency. This survival handbook helps you put a disaster preparedness plan in place for you and your family. Wrote by someone who has been in a variety of crises and situations, this survival book gives you information on how to get out of trouble. McDougall reveals how he lives life and tells readers how to live life with the same confidence in any scenario. We like that this book is fully illustrated so you can actually see how to build a fire in a variety of conditions or how to build a shelter. There is so much information in this book so you can be prepared for anything. You should also be happy to know that Len McDougall has field tested pretty much everything, including water filters, kayaks, tents, cameras, and boots, so you can trust his tips and information.
Barry Davies spent 18 years in the British Special Air Service, so he knows a thing or two about being prepared. This survival handbook is pretty up to date and modern since was wrote in 2012. Davies has taken into account all of the modern aspects of society and put together tips and plans for you to continue your life successfully in a healthy manner when all else fails. After reading, you will be far more prepared for a natural disaster, biological and chemical warfare, a government shut down, and many more terrifying situations.
We know the chances of a catastrophic event can be slim, but after the tornadoes in Oklahoma, wild fire out west, and the crazy floods in Calgary having some extra knowledge and some survival skills would not hurt! And of course if a World War Z type situation occurred all the skills these books talk about would totally apply. So whether you are prepping for a hurricane, war, or for zombies these survival books will help you successfully make it through. We’ve got something for everyone and these state park campgrounds are so awesome that even you out of staters are going to want to make the trek to Michigan!
1. Ludington State Park- Ludington, MI
Located on the western side of the state on the coast of Lake Michigan, the campgrounds at Ludington State Park may offer the best camping experience available in the state. Within the park are different campgrounds to accommodate different types of camping ranging from super rustic (no electricity and rustic toilets) to modern sites with showers, bathrooms, and electricity. They even have some cabins. What really sets Ludington apart from other camping spots is the variety of activities available to campers. For those of you who love the beach, Ludington offers several miles of beaches for you to relax on. There is a boat launch and if you feel like paddling into the lake there are boats you can rent. Catch some fish or go for a hike to the local lighthouses in your down time. There are 21.5 miles of hiking trails, a 4 mile canoe trail, a 2 mile bike trail, and a 10 mile cross country skiing trail if you happen to be there in the winter. This is the perfect camping spot for the whole family, whether you are a busy body or just looking for some relaxation time.
2. Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park- Ontonagon, MI
The Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park is located on the northern coast of the Upper Peninsula and is 60,000 acres making it on of the few large wilderness areas remaining in the Midwest. This state park offers a variety of camp sites from the rustic to sites with modern bathroom and shower facilities. If tent camping isn’t really your thing, cabins, lodges, and even yurts are available. If you are not familiar with what a yurt is, a yurt is a circular domed tent that sits on a platform. The activities are endless in this state park. If you are looking for some adventure try mountain biking through the mountains. It’s really the only way to get to the most remote (aka most beautiful) parts of the park. This state park also has more than 90 waterfalls surrounded by lush green forests. One thing to be aware of is that there are black bears in this park so there are certain rules that you will need to follow in regards to your food and gear. The Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park is truly an outdoor playground and perfect for anyone wanting to do more than just camp.
3. Tahquamenon Falls State Park- Paradise, MI
Staying up north in the Upper Peninsula, our number three pick is camping at Tahquamenon Falls State Park. This park has different sites to suit whatever type of camping you prefer ranging from rustic sites to cabins. The obvious attraction to this state park is being able to see the Upper Falls, which is one of the largest waterfalls east of the Mississippi River. This waterfall is 200 feet across and has a 50 foot drop. It is truly something to see. Four miles down the Tahquamenon River is the Lower Falls. The Lower Falls consists of a series of five smaller falls cascading down around an island. Not quite as exciting as the Upper Falls, but still beautiful. There are several different hiking trails to explore during the day and there are plenty of good fishing opportunities along the riverbank. Boat rentals for canoes and row boats are available at the Lower Falls. Black bear, fox, deer, coyotes, otter, beaver, and mink can all be seen in the park along with many different types of birds including the bald eagle. Moose can often be seen in the wet areas of the park as well. The scenic landscape cannot be beat and if your looking to see some wildlife this is the place for you.

If you are looking for a family friendly camping area the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore is the one for you! The Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore is really great option for families with children due to the vast amount of activities available that the kids would enjoy.
5. Hoffmaster State Park- Muskegon, MI
Last, but not least is Hoffmaster State Park in Muskegon, MI. WE recommend this campgrounds for those with smaller children looking for a peaceful camping experience. Firstly this campgrounds has alcohol restrictions, so you aren’t going to encounter any wild parties going on all night. The campground offers a private beach and there is a larger beach in the park, both are pristine. Many of the camping sites are spacious and heavily shaded so you can get away from the sun. Children’s activities are hosted each and the Gillette Visitor Center offers other nature activities. The main attraction at Hoffmaster is the Dune Climb Stairway which leads you to the top of a dune with an observation deck looking over the dunes and Lake Michigan. The camp sites have electrical hook ups and the bathroom facilities are modern. Hiking is a great way to get exercise, but it can also be an amazing way to see the world. Here are 5 places where hiking, culture, and beautiful landscapes all come together.
1. Cinque Terre- Italy
If you are looking for a less strenuous hike with plenty of amazing views and still
want to take in Italian culture, hike Cinque Terre. Cinque Terre is a rugged portion of coast in the Italian Riviera and is made up of 5 villages: Monterosso al Mare, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola, and Riomaggiore. You can hike between all five villages at your own pace with mountains on one side and the sea on the other. Taking the coast trail takes about five hours at a continuous pace. There is a more difficult trail that goes along the ridge if you are looking for something more challenging. Be sure to bring a bathing suit on this hike because you will most definitely get tempted by the sea. Don’t worry about getting tired either! Trains and ferry service connect all the villages as well!
2. Mont Blanc – France, Italy, & Switzerland
This European hike takes you through three countries and all throughout the Alps. This hikes takes you on a two week circle and has huts to stay in at night. Valleys, meadows, glaciers, and the white peaks on the mountains provide excellent views. This hike is best done during the summer so you can have good weather and this hike has very easy stretches and very difficult areas. Plus since you are going through three different counties, you get to take in three different cultures.
3. Tongariro Northern Circuit – New Zealand
New Zealand is a beautiful country and there are plenty of reasons to go there, but the Tongariro Northern Circuit is another reason! This hike takes you around one of the three volcanoes on the North Island: Mt. Ngauruhoe, which Is featured in Lord of the Rings. This hiking loop is about 19 miles long and your see a variety of landscapes like forest land, desert, and grassy areas. On top of all that, you also get to see Red Crater and Emerald Lakes. Plan for about 3-4 days to walk the trail and do it in the summer when it is well marked.
4. John Muir Trail – California, USA
Beginning in Yosemite National Park and continuing on 215 miles through Ansel Adams Wilderness, Sequoia National Park, King’s Canyon National Park, and ending at Mount Whitney. This is the perfect trail if you are a nature lover this is the hiking trail for you. It’s best to hike this trail in August or September so you can avoid snow and to do the whole trail takes about 30 days. For a more practical hike to this trail in one week sections and do one each summer! This is a moderate to strenuous hike so it is not recommended for beginners. This trail does require a trail permit and you will need to protect your food from bears.
5. Inca Trail – Peru
Often rated in the top 5 hikes in the world, the Inca Trail takes you through the Andes Mountains to Machu Picchu. This four day hike can be done if you are in decent shape and it is wise to take a couple breaks to adjust to the altitude. The landscape is amazing combining nature with the historic ruins of the Incas. Time this hike right and you can end up at Machu Picchu for sunrise ( the best time). Rihanna, Jay-Z, Common, Lana Del Rey….What do these celebrities have in common? They are all in on the camo trend!
Military inspired and camouflage fashion trends come back around every couple years and it just happens to be in right now. Huge fashion retailers have jumped on the bandwagon offering modified military looks that include studs, tighter fits, and high prices. Harry’s offers a lot of the staple pieces needs to pull off these hot fashion trends at a much more affordable price.
For guys looking to stay on point in the fashion game, a super easy way to incorporate camouflage into your wardrobe is with a pair of camo pants or camo shorts. You can go with the traditional style or a vintage wash. Jay-Z went with the traditional look, which is a stiffer, more crisp material. Camo pants can be dressed so many different ways. We really like pairing them with a bright pair of sneakers like Common to make the camo seem less military and more high fashion. Camo shorts, like the ones Lil Wayne is wearing, provide a more casual look and can easily be paired with hoodies, sneakers, and sandals.
Ladies, you too can find these trendy looks for less with Harry’s! If you aren’t ready to fully commit to the camouflage trend, then start out with a subtle camo hat like Rihanna. There are so many camouflage patterns available in the traditional patrol cap that you won’t have a problem find a hat to match your outfit. If you want a more bold look, get the paratrooper pants. Pair them with sneakers for a casual look or cinch the ankle openings and throw on some heels for a look thats ready for night on the town. Lana Del Rey has taken a men’s BDU coat and paired it with shorts and wedge boots.
We also have basic camo t-shirts that are also an easy and very inexpensive way to add camo to your closet. Also if your a local customer, check out our surplus section. We get plenty of surplus clothing including jackets, shirts, pants, and hats that can be worn as is or can be revamped. Our surplus clothing section offers slightly blemished clothing at ridiculously good prices, plus its authentic military gear.
Whether you shop online or in store, finding the perfect camo items will be a cinch. Hats, pants, shirts, jackets, coats, bandannas, we’ve got everything!
