The importance of being able to defend yourself is more apparent each day. Learning self defense is something that everyone in the family can participate in and there are classes happening all across the country for entire family.

Moisture wicking fabrics are being used in all sorts of clothing items lately, from moisture wicking t-shirts to sports bras to moisture wicking socks. Do these fabrics really help keep you dry? Absolutely! While no fabric will keep you perfectly dry at all times, moisture wicking fabrics are significantly better at keeping you dry compared to traditional natural fibers like cotton.

Moisture wicking fabrics are created from synthetic fibers that are hydrophobic, or water-hating. These fibers do not absorb water but instead repel it towards the surface, allowing for fast evaporation and drying. Synthetic fibers such as polyester and polypropylene are used in these fabrics. Natural fibers like cotton are hydrophilic, or water-loving. Natural fibers are great at absorbing moisture but do not evaporate as well, leaving you feeling damp longer. Blends of these fibers create an excellent moisture wicking material that creates a “pull/push” effect, pulling the moisture away from the skin and pushing it to the fabric surface to evaporate. Since the wetness pulls to the surface of the fabric, the skin stays considerably drier than with pure cotton. Poly/cotton blends are highly breathable providing air circulation and added comfort.

Cold weather clothing is also an important use of moisture wicking fabric. Since the fabric dries much quicker, there is less chance of moisture freezing and causing hypothermia or cold weather injuries like frostbite. No one wants to sit around in cold, soaking wet clothing!

On this memorial day, we’d like thank all of the Veterans who gave their lives to maintain our freedom here at home. You live in our hearts and minds. We’d also like to thank their families who have sacrificed so very much.

In addition though, it seems important that we remember those who are still alive and have come home to us somewhat worse for wear from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. We honor your sacrifice and hope that your burden will be lifted with time.
