Contamination of oceans, rivers, lakes, and ground water is caused by a variety of different pollutants. Many of the pollutants that make their way into our water source are man made chemicals that are discharged into bodies of water, either directly or inadvertently. The majority of these chemicals are not only dangerous to the organisms living in these bodies of water, but also to surrounding nature, animals, and plants using these water sources for sustaining life.
Aside from the ecological threat chemicals in our water pose, we as a society have to be worried about drinking from such water sources unless we have taken the proper steps to purify and treat the water. Factories and industrial manufacturers are actually allowed by the government a certain amount of air and water pollution every year. This is why when you are hiking or camping, it is important to have some type of water filtration device on hand if you need to use water from a river, stream, or lake.
To remove the harmful effects of contaminated water for drinking, bathing, or cooking, the new AquaStar Plus water purifier is the way to go. This water decontaminator is a spectracidal treatment solution container that is ideal for any climate or setting. The UV-C portable water purifier by AquaStar uses a pair of standard CR-123 batteries, and UV light deactivation to significantly reduce the number of viruses and bacteria, quickly giving you safe drinking water, one liter at a time. The simple, lightweight, one-button water purifier can treat a liter of water in 80 seconds.
In addition to the AquaStar Plus purifier, the AquaStar AUX Power Kit provides you with an alternative running option using built-in batteries. The Aqua Star Plus water purifier comes with a wall adapter that fits North American outlets, and a cigarette lighter adapter for purifying on the go.
Hiking is a great pastime. It is a nice way to explore the environment while at the same time getting some fresh air and exercise. What you wear on your feet is the most important aspect of hiking. So many inexperienced hikers think that they can just throw on a pair of sandals, moccasins, or tennis shoes and head out for a day of walking.
Choosing the right shoes for your hike can make or break the experience. The following are the most important things to consider when you are selecting hiking boots.
1. FIT. You must get a boot that fits well. One that offers you support in all areas. If you have a wide foot, then you need to purchase a wide shoe. The same goes for those with a narrow foot. A good fit will help prevent the aches and pains that will end your hike prematurely.
2. PROTECTION. Your tennis shoes may be comfortable but they will not protect you in the same way that a hiking boot will. You want to make sure that you choose a boot that covers your entire foot and ankle. These boots should also have a sturdy sole. As you walk, you may encounter sticks, poison ivy or oak, and even an occasional snake. Full protection is key to selecting a hiking shoe.
3. WATERPROOF. Water is one biggest issue you are likely to encounter when hiking. Wet feet not only can affect your body temperature but can also cause unnecessary soreness and rubbing. When selecting a hiking boot or shoe, don’t just settle for water resistant. Instead choose a waterproof option instead. They will likely cost a bit more but you will find they provide endless comfort even when wet.
4. STYLING. Some worry about how their boots will look. Choosing the right style means getting a quality boot. Selecting a boot with strong laces, at least ankle high, and with little to no heel will serve you best. Choosing a style that is dark in color and made of a sturdy material will help to ensure that they remain in good condition for a long time.
Selecting the right hiking boot is important. Even if you only hike occasionally or are just getting into it, the right shoe is imperative. Honestly, purchasing a good hiking boot is the best investment you will ever make.
The importance of being able to defend yourself is more apparent each day. Learning self defense is something that everyone in the family can participate in and there are classes happening all across the country for entire family.
Self defense classes will give you a good base knowledge of how to ward off an attack. This will deal with what you can do to disorient an attacker and give you enough time to make an escape. These are great strategies, especially for children. They might not have the strength to overpower an attacker, but they might have an opportunity to put them out of commission for a few minutes to make an escape.
This kind of training will also pertain to using the force of the attack against the one who is assaulting. Being able to turn the tables quickly and think clearly is something that can rarely be done without training in doing just that. In many cases these attacks are swift and very unexpected, so being able to immediately assess the situation and turn that situation against the attacker can save your life.
As the head of a household, this kind of training can also be valuable as no one is safe from things like burglary or muggings. However, as this head of a household, it is also your responsibility to arm your family with the self defense knowledge that can keep them safe even when you happen to be away.
These courses for self defense will cover all kinds of scenarios, offering solutions for attacks and assaults from virtually any angle. This means that with enough time and focus, you can literally be prepared for nearly anything. Not only this, but this is a great way to bond with your family while expressing how much you care about them. Showing such a personal interest in the safety of all of your family members can have a lasting impact on the people they become later in their life.
Self defense courses should be available in your town, or in a city near to you. Looking online should be a good way to determine the closest courses to you, and when they are starting up classes for new participants. Remember that you are able to arm yourself with a strategy to save your own life, if you take the steps to learn this strategy.
Ever ask yourself “why do my feet hurt at the end of the day?” Or wonder “why do I have back pain after a day on the job?“ Have you ever wondered why, even when your shoes feel soft and cushy you still aren’t comfortable after being on your feet for long periods of time? It’s a common misconception that good shoes or boots are soft and full of cushion. The truth is that in order to stay comfortable, your body needs support. With tennis shoes and cheaper, soft footwear, you don’t get the support your body needs. On top of that, many boot stores are lined with thick carpet (this makes anything feel better) and salespeople are more concerned about making a sale than making sure you are just as happy at the end of the day as you are at the beginning. I learned this the hard way.
A year ago now, I was in the market for some new shoes. I went shopping around, and as many people do, I was looking for the coolest looking boots, not even considering comfort too much. Now I am a younger man, but I already have a herniated disc in my back and Patellofemoral Syndrome in my knee. Despite this I never realized how much the right boots can reduce back pain. In any case, I purchased “X” shoes that appeared to be “comfortable” (in other words cushiony) from one of the stores I had been shopping around at. My back and knee pain only got worse after hours of time spent on them.
About a month later, I got some Timberland Pro Valor tactical boots from Harry’s Army Surplus, and this was the first time I learned something. First off these boots had a nylon shank in them, which I later learned is to better support your arch and calves. They also had a molded external heel cage to better hold your heel in place. All that aside, within the first hour of putting them on, I was in heaven. I instantly noticed that my posture was better: the heel support and the height of the boot caused me to stand up straighter. I also noticed that my back and knee were not hurting nearly as bad. The boot itself was not very stiff, so from tennis shoes to an 8 in boot was a little easier transition. At the end of the day was that I was so far less fatigued than normal from having this supportive footwear, that the day flew by! Before, I could tell how far into my shift I was by how sore and tired I was. This day, however, I had worked 10 hours and felt like I had only worked 3. It was amazing and changed my life. This is just one example of how support is more important that cushion when choosing your boots and how making sure the person helping you is knowledgeable of these factors that will help keep you comfortable and happy throughout your entire day.
Moisture wicking fabrics are being used in all sorts of clothing items lately, from moisture wicking t-shirts to sports bras to moisture wicking socks. Do these fabrics really help keep you dry? Absolutely! While no fabric will keep you perfectly dry at all times, moisture wicking fabrics are significantly better at keeping you dry compared to traditional natural fibers like cotton.
Moisture wicking fabrics are created from synthetic fibers that are hydrophobic, or water-hating. These fibers do not absorb water but instead repel it towards the surface, allowing for fast evaporation and drying. Synthetic fibers such as polyester and polypropylene are used in these fabrics. Natural fibers like cotton are hydrophilic, or water-loving. Natural fibers are great at absorbing moisture but do not evaporate as well, leaving you feeling damp longer. Blends of these fibers create an excellent moisture wicking material that creates a “pull/push” effect, pulling the moisture away from the skin and pushing it to the fabric surface to evaporate. Since the wetness pulls to the surface of the fabric, the skin stays considerably drier than with pure cotton. Poly/cotton blends are highly breathable providing air circulation and added comfort.
Cold weather clothing is also an important use of moisture wicking fabric. Since the fabric dries much quicker, there is less chance of moisture freezing and causing hypothermia or cold weather injuries like frostbite. No one wants to sit around in cold, soaking wet clothing!
Lucky for you, Harry’s Army Surplus offers a variety of moisture wicking items. Even if you are not able to stop in our Metro-Detroit location, check us out online!
